Takes about a minute. Free, no obligation.

We share your request only with providers relevant to your job.

If you own or are buying land near Ocala and searching for horse barn builders in Ocala, FL, you are probably sorting through national kit sellers, builders from other states, and ads that all look alike. This site is a simpler starting point: describe your project and timeline once, and independent builders who work in Ocala and Marion County can contact you with quotes.

What we do (and what we do not)

Ocala Horse Barn Builders is an independent referral service. We are not a builder. We do not design, build, or inspect barns or arenas, we do not hold a contractor license, and we do not do the work. We connect horse owners and farm buyers with local builders and publish plain-English guides so you go into those conversations informed.

  • Free for you. You never pay us. Builders may pay for introductions to people who asked for quotes.
  • No obligation. You decide whether to talk to anyone and whom to hire.
  • Builders are independent. Each one is responsible for its own quote, licensing, insurance, permits, contract, and workmanship. We do not guarantee any builder's work, so please verify everything yourself. Our guide to choosing a horse barn builder shows how.

How it works

  1. Describe your project. Use the form on this page: barn, arena, or shed; number of stalls or arena size; where the property is; budget; timeline; and any material preference (wood, steel, concrete block). Rough answers are fine.
  2. We share it with relevant builders. With your consent, your request goes to local providers that fit what you described, not to a long list of unrelated companies.
  3. You compare. A builder may reach out, and most will want to see the site before giving a real price. Ask for written quotes that say what is included (stalls, slab, electrical, water, site work), then compare them side by side.

Why Ocala is its own market

Marion County, with Ocala as its county seat, is often called the Horse Capital of the World. A 2023 equine economic impact study by the American Horse Council Foundation, reported by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association, counted about 75,000 horses and ponies in the county and roughly 210,000 acres used for horse-related purposes, more than a fifth of the county's land. That is an industry-sponsored study, so treat the numbers as indicative, but the point stands: horse construction here is a normal line of work, from small backyard barns to full training facilities. It also means builders vary a lot, from specialists who build only equestrian facilities to general contractors who build a barn now and then.

What people ask us to quote

  • Horse barns and stables. Shedrow and center-aisle barns, from a few stalls to a dozen or more, with tack room, wash stall, and wiring. See the horse barn cost guide.
  • Riding arenas. Open or covered, new or resurfaced. See riding arena construction in Ocala.
  • Run-in sheds and shelters. Simple three-sided structures for turnout.
  • Barns with living quarters. A barn with an apartment is not treated like a plain farm building; expect more permitting.
  • Arena footing and renovation. New footing, re-grading, drainage fixes.

Florida climate changes the design

Heat, humidity, summer storms, and hurricane winds shape how a barn should be built here: airflow first, then drainage, then structure. We summarize the main points, and where the experts we found agree, in our guide to barn design for the Florida climate.

Permits: farm buildings are a special case

Florida Statute 604.50 exempts nonresidential farm buildings on land used for bona fide agricultural purposes from the Florida Building Code and from county and municipal codes and fees, with an exception for floodplain management rules. That can matter for your budget and timeline, but it does not apply to every horse property, and it does not apply to a residence. We explain the nuance, and tell you to confirm with the county or city, in our builder checklist.

Areas we cover

We focus on Ocala and the surrounding part of Marion County, including Reddick, Anthony, Citra, Belleview, and Dunnellon, and we will pass along requests just outside the county. See the areas page for notes on each.

Frequently asked questions

Are you a horse barn builder?

No. Ocala Horse Barn Builders is an independent referral service operated by Northpine Local. We pass your project details to local builders who may be a fit. They visit the site, give you the quote, and do the work.

Does it cost anything to request quotes?

No. The service is free for horse owners and buyers. Builders may pay us for introductions, which is how the site is funded. You are never obligated to hire anyone.

How much does a horse barn cost in Ocala?

It depends on materials, finish level, stall count, and site work. Published cost guides disagree widely, so our cost guide gives labelled planning ranges per square foot and an example table for 4-, 8- and 12-stall barns. Only a builder who has seen your site can price it.

Do I need a building permit for a horse barn in Marion County?

Not always, and the answer is a real nuance. Florida law exempts nonresidential farm buildings on land used for bona fide agricultural purposes from the Florida Building Code and from county or municipal codes and fees, except for floodplain rules. Whether your barn qualifies depends on your land and use, so confirm with the county or city before you build. Barns with living quarters are a different case.

Do you recommend a specific builder?

No. We do not endorse any builder on this site. Verify licenses, insurance, references, and plans yourself; our checklist shows how.

How many builders will contact me?

It depends on your project and location. We aim to share your request only with builders relevant to your job and area, not with everyone. You can tell each builder how you prefer to be contacted.
